It was stated that Sarapin produced prolonged relief in contrast to fleeting or negative results with other solutions, novocaine, saline, and water. In a number of instances, patients with neuralgic pain obtained prolonged relief by a subsequent injection of pitcher plant distillate compared to novocaine.

In an animal study, the pitcher plant distillate was explained by experiments performed on the action potentials of the saphenous nerve of a cat, which showed that the C-fiber potential was completely obliterated by pitcher plant extract after immersion in the solution for about 5 minutes. Also the maximal A spike was somewhat reduced.
